I spent a wonderful morning recently photographing this lovely couple at their Highgate home and on Hampstead Heath, one of my favourite locations for portrait photography in North London.

As regular readers of my blog will know, I specialise in family photography and am usually running around the park photographing little ones. It is always such a joy to do something a little different, and I was thrilled to be booked for this session to celebrate their first home and to record this time in their life together.

Recording hobbies and interests in creative portraits

It is one of the real privileges of my work that I get to meet so many interesting people and gain a glimpse into their lives, and this portrait session was one of the most inspiring for me in a long time.

I love hearing about my clients’ hobbies, and this shoot was full of them. There was knitting, Lego, guitar, piano, and so many other skills and crafts. Even more impressively, everything was done to such a high level. I was given some very good advice in my own search for a hobby, which was to find something and stick with it. Wise words for someone who loves the idea of a leisure activity but never quite commits.

Seeing how much joy these hobbies brought and appreciating the time and care that must have gone into developing them, made it a very inspiring morning.

Pet portraits at home in Highgate

I always love it when I am asked to include animals in portrait sessions. I will admit that I am usually a little more confident with dogs than with cats. Many cats take one look at the camera and disappear over the nearest fence.

But this cat was amazing. Clearly keen to be part of the session, they were happy to pose and stay involved, and I love the variety of pet portraits we were able to capture during this Highgate photo shoot.

Hampstead Heath portrait photography with adults

I always like to include some time outdoors on my sessions, as indoor and outdoor portraits have such a different feel. It is lovely to create a mix of images, especially when clients live in such a beautiful part of London. Hampstead Heath is one of my favourite places in the city for portrait photography.

We had a relaxed walk together, exploring and chatting while finding different spots for photographs. These quieter moments often create the most natural images.

It was such a fun day from start to finish, and I came home feeling inspired to spend more time on my own hobbies and to expand my knowledge of science fiction. It was a real pleasure to meet two such interesting people, and I hope our paths cross again before too long.
