Helen Bartlett Photography Interview in Digital Camera Magazine
My Family Photography Featured in Digital Camera Magazine!
I’m so pleased to share that my work was featured in a seven page interview in Digital Camera Magazine this August.
It’s always wonderful to see my work in print and so I was thrilled when the editors at Digital Camera Magazine got in touch to ask if they could publish an interview with me and share some of my work.
Magazines are such a source of inspiration for my fellow photographers and it’s a huge honour to have such a big interview published in such a prestigious publication.
It’s also a wonderful way to celebrate the amazing families who I have worked with, and continue to work with, over my 23 years as a professional family photographer. Families who have been trusting me to photograph their children and tell their stories in my beautiful and timeless black and white style.
How the Family Photographer Interview Came About
As regular readers will know when I’m not photographing families then I have a role as a brand ambassador for Canon. This is a hugely prestigious appointment and I’m honoured to have been on the program since 2018, the only family photographer for the entire EMEA region.
As part of my role I get to inspire other photographers, helping them learn how to take better photographs of their clients and get more from their cameras. It’s a fantastic privilege and I love sharing my ideas and techniques with my fellow professional photographers.
Often this will be done as face to face lectures at the big annual trade shows or at venues such as the Apple Store on London’s Regent Street. But here it was in print which I always love. Fair to say my mum was thrilled when she could take the magazine to show her friends and the local club for the elderly.
Highlights from the Interview
I’m always so interested to see what people like to talk about when I’m interviewed. As always my love of black and white was a big focus of our discussion.
It was great to be able to explain how I love the timeless nature of monochrome and how important it is to me that the pictures I take now will look good when the children have grown up. I’ve been in the industry for two decades now and seen so many colour trends come and go. Yet monochrome remains looking just as good as it did when I started. I love how all the pictures that I take look good with the ones before and the ones yet to come. If you want to see this in practice take a look at the growing up galleries where you can see how well the pictures fit together as families grow up.
A Privilege and a Joy to Inspire Others
Even after so long in the business and many magazine articles published all over the world it still feels amazing to see my work in print. It reminds me how far I’ve come since my first photo shoot back in 2003 and how lucky I am to still love this job just as much now as I did back then.
I can see looking back how far my photography has come and I’m so excited for the future, the next steps in the journey that I will travel with my clients and the pictures we are yet to take together.
Thank You!
This seems a great opportunity to say a huge thank you to my wonderful clients and also to the many followers and supporters I have on this blog and across social media. You mean so much to me and I’m so lucky to have such an incredible group of people helping me push my work forward. Of course the biggest thanks go to my husband Tom for looking after me at all times, especially in the busy season where exciting photo shoots are followed by long days at the computer and every weekend is spent with clients. You are the best and I’ll be making dinner as soon as the Christmas deadlines are past!
