A Newborn Photo Shoot in Battersea

I first met Monique back in 2012 when I took some newborn baby photographs of her eldest son. Since then we’ve met a number of times; for family photos, for her second son’s newborn pictures and now, to welcome baby Julia into the family and record this special time in a third set of beautiful newborn portraits.

Watching families grow and getting to know the children is definitely one of the best things about my job.

We spent a wonderful morning together in Battersea photographing Julia and her older brothers.  Newborn photo shoots are always special – an incredible time when the family are getting to know the new arrival and the air is infused with a feeling of excitement and new possibilities as well as an incredible sense of love.  It’s wonderful to see the look of a parent for their newborn child – see them breathing them in with such love.

It’s also wonderful to see older children take the first tentative steps towards getting to know their new siblings.  Moments range from a quiet, gentle stroke of the head to roaring with laughter at a family joke.  Older siblings bring such energy to a newborn session they make it great fun for me to photograph.

It’s always hard to choose a favourite from this session but this picture of Monique and Julia jumped out at me.  I love the expressions, Julia fast asleep in a wonderful warm snuggly snooze and Monique – so close, so totally absorbed in her beautiful baby daughter.  It’s a look of pure love.

Newborn photo shoots are a relatively new thing – when I first started my photography business back in 2003 it was very rare to have professional photographs taken so early but now it’s very common and such a wonderful thing to do.  I look at pictures like this and think – what an amazing photograph for Julia to have when she’s grown up.  A picture that is so full of love.  What a gift for the future.
