I was thrilled when the father of this lovely family got in touch to enquire about purchasing a family photo shoot as a birthday gift for his wife. Photos are such a brilliant present as they are one of the few things we buy which really grow in value over time. A picture taken today will be treasured now and treasured even more so in thirty years time when the children are grown up and looking back on them, perhaps with their own children. Family photo shoot days are great fun as everyone is spending time with their favourite people and we are setting out with the aim of a brilliant morning together. It works so well. While we make sure to take some posed family photographs, it is mainly about playing together so children and adults can relax and enjoy the experience. I love seeing the interactions between siblings, between children and their parents, all the moments that make up a family’s life together recorded in beautiful photographs.
Capturing the girls’ personalities
I love how different personalities come out in photos and how we see different moods over the course of a morning, from the excitement of leaping into the air at the start of a photo shoot to the quiet pensive stare of a tired child towards the end. Both have so much to tell us and I love the challenge of finding different compositions and approaches as the session develops, creating a really varied set of images for my clients to choose from.
Exploring and having fun during a birthday photo shoot
Kew is an amazing place to explore as everywhere you turn there is something beautiful to see. Utilising the members early morning opening times at the end of the summer, we were also lucky to have the place to ourselves. It is always worth the early alarm clock for the peace of entering the park at 8am. I love how children are always keen to explore, and instilling a love of nature when they are so young will be a gift that brings so much fulfilment in the future.
Games and laughter on this birthday gift photo shoot
As always, the best family photographs are made when people are having fun, so we played loads of games, running around, laughing, hiding, and jumping to avoid hot feet when the floor turned to lava. The world of the imagination is the perfect place for a photo shoot, and I loved seeing how much the parents threw themselves into the games. The resulting pictures are full of energy and joy.
Back home and the garden swing
Heading home for a final few photographs is often a good idea after an exciting morning out exploring. It is always lovely to include images that show people’s homes, as this is where most of life is lived and where so many memories will be held for the children as they grow older. It also gives the opportunity for a quick refuel with an early lunch, which is often a brilliant way to ensure a relaxed and enjoyable final part of the photo shoot.
We feasted on avocado toast and then had a play in the garden, which was such good fun.
Finishing with a story
We finished the session with a story in the girls’ room. A lunchtime nap beckoned for the youngest, and quiet time for the rest of the family after an exciting morning. It is lovely to take photographs of these calm moments at the end of a session. I often find they are some of my favourites from the day, quiet family rituals full of memories, and I can imagine they will be the images the girls return to again and again as they grow up.
