Extended family photo shoot in Wimbledon

Wimbledon family photo shoot with grandparents

It’s been such a busy year, and I’ve been very slow sharing some pictures from this amazing family photo shoot in August this year. As the family are enjoying their beautiful albums and prints I thought I should put a few favourites up here on the blog. It was such a fun session, and I’m thrilled with these images from our extended family photo shoot in Wimbledon in South West London.

Extended family photo shoots are always a lot of fun and a great challenge for me as a photographer. Making sure to take great images of everyone together, individual families, children in different combinations, and capturing all the fun of the day means there is always a lot to cover. It is an action packed morning for me, and I love extended family photo shoots. They are often some of my favourite sessions as there is so much going on, and I’m always excited by the opportunities for photographs that they give me.

This extended family photo shoot in Wimbledon was such great fun, and I hope you like the pictures as much as I do.

It was a really fun challenge finding some great spots for family group shots while also working with very bright sunlight and very little shade. I’m thrilled with the results we got, finding small pockets of soft light that worked beautifully for portraits. The joke is always that photographers do not love bright sunny days. We much prefer a grey day with soft light for photo shoots. Bright light certainly creates its challenges, but there are usually spots, even if they are very small, where we can find good light.

The family were brilliant at squeezing into the small patches of shade both in the garden and in front of the house so we could create some beautiful family photographs with everyone included.

Football and natural action photographs

The main activity of choice for the children was football. When I arrived at 8am they were already running around outside showing some impressive football skills. Once we had our group shots done, we headed straight out to play football on the fabulous patch of grass outside the house. It was so much fun taking photographs that captured their energy and enthusiasm, as well as some serious skills from everyone involved.

Reflections and sibling portraits

Sometimes during a large family photo shoot like this one I end up with images of siblings that share a similar theme. This is often unplanned, or at least the first image is unplanned and comes from reacting to something I notice. Once I have taken one photograph, I keep an eye out for a similar moment with another sibling. I love this pair of reflection images of these beautiful siblings, both taken in their kitchen and both with a lovely, slightly ethereal feel.

Table tennis and garden games

The family had some great outdoor games to hand, with table tennis and Spikeball being particular favourites. It was lovely to include some action shots while we were in the back garden, adding another layer of variety to their extended family photo shoot in Wimbledon.

Individual family portraits

As well as the action shots and the larger group photographs, I always make sure to take portraits of individual families during an extended family session. I love how, even in the same spaces, each family has such a strong sense of personality. No two sets of images are ever the same, and this individuality is such a joy to photograph.

Indoor games and relaxed family moments

When it became too hot outside, something I never thought I would write living in the UK, we headed indoors for some games. This gave everyone the chance to interact and relax together. Uno is always a favourite during family photo shoots, and I love how it creates moments of connection between the players as well as wider images that really show the fun of a shared family activity.

We finished the session with charades, a game I had not played for ages, but one that offered some lovely opportunities for portraits. The light in the living room was fantastic, with large windows providing beautiful soft light onto our stage area where the children performed their mimes. There were some brilliant performances, and it was wonderful to see a traditional game still making everyone laugh.

A final family group photograph brought the session to a close. Tired and hungry, we all headed off to lunch and, I imagine, a relaxing afternoon nap. I definitely slept on the train home. It was a brilliant extended family photo shoot in Wimbledon from start to finish, and I’m so thrilled with the results.
