Location, location, location – family photo shoots in West London parks

I spent an amazing morning of family photography in West London parks recently and I’m thrilled to share some images from our photo shoot today. This was our fourth session together and our best one yet. A glorious morning of fun, laughter and relaxed family photography.

Family photography sessions in West London parks are relaxed, playful and designed around your children. Using favourite parks, familiar spaces and a mix of outdoor and home photography creates natural images that reflect real family life.

I first met the family back in 2022 when we did a family photo shoot in Fulham Palace and Bishops Park in West London. It was one of those bright December days and even now, looking back on it still makes me smile. We had such a great time together. Since then we have done annual family photography sessions, including one in Barcelona when the family were living there for a while. Each year we update their pictures, recording family life through natural and beautiful images to treasure.

This year we chose a selection of parks across West London for our family photography session. Photographing in different parks added lovely variety to the images and made the session even more fun.

Choosing West London parks for family photos

Choosing the right park for a family photo shoot is always an enjoyable part of the planning process. There are often several things to consider. From my point of view, I look for plenty of space, beautiful backgrounds, opportunities for play, and shade on sunny days.

From a four-year-old’s point of view, the priorities can be very different. Is it near a favourite cafe for a treat? Does it have the best climbing frame? As with all family photography, compromises are made and variety really does add to the fun. I love being challenged to create natural family photographs in different settings and situations.

We started our family photo shoot in a local West London park. It was more of a common really, with a small playground, but it was a favourite with my young subject and worked brilliantly. The playground in particular was such fun. It was tiny but full of character, and we played hide and seek before setting sail on the pirate boat.

One of my favourite photographs of the day, and in fact one of my favourite images of the year and the picture which opens this blog post, was taken in the tunnel of the climbing frame. Bright light streamed in, creating a beautiful pattern of light and shadow.

Pictures at home, indoors and outdoors for added variety

After a brilliant time taking family photos in the West London park, we headed back home for some more pictures. I always like to include indoor photographs as part of my family photography sessions where possible. These images tell such important stories. Home is where families spend most of their time and I love capturing children with their toys and favourite activities and seeing how these change from year to year.

Some games continue year after year, while others suddenly come into their own. Playing with tiny creatures was still a big favourite this year, and a new addition was chess, which is dad’s big hobby and clearly becoming a family favourite too. I love photographing the concentration of a game, and the joy and emotion that comes with it.

While there was a hilarious ‘sad face’ when dad won, moments like these are such a wonderful part of family photography. Children learning how to win and lose well is one of the most valuable life lessons of all.

While many families initially think of doing only outdoor images for their family photo sessions, I always recommend mixing indoor and outdoor photographs where possible. London parks are incredible and make fantastic locations for family photography, but indoor images are very different and add real depth and variety to your final gallery.

Battersea Park for family photos

After a short break and an early lunch, we headed out to Battersea Park for the final part of our family photography session. One of the things I love about working with regular clients is how relaxed the sessions become. We often pause for lunch and then continue photographing afterwards, keeping everyone happy and energised.

I am always happy to spend plenty of time on family photo shoots. The longer we have together, the more relaxed everyone becomes and the more variety we can create in the images. It is always better to stop, eat, and then continue than to push on when everyone really needs a sandwich.

Refuelled and full of energy, we explored Battersea Park, climbing trees, running down hills and finding endless opportunities for play. These moments resulted in such a wide range of natural family photographs.

It was a brilliant day from start to finish and I am so pleased to share some favourites from this family photography session. I am already looking forward to next year.

Frequently asked questions about family photography in West London parks

Family photo shoots in a West London park are an opportunity to spend a morning with your family just having fun together. With no distractions like sorting out the washing or that bit of DIY, this is time just to be together, enjoying each other’s company and celebrating the love you have for each other as a family.

Go to your favourite park, do your favourite things, you have fun and I take care of the photographs. Picture your perfect day together and that is what your family photography session in a West London park can look like.

West London is ideal for family photography because it offers a wide variety of parks that suit different ages, energy levels and personalities. From larger parks such as Battersea Park to smaller and more private spaces like Ladbroke Square or Cadogan Gardens, there is so much choice. Think about which parks your children love most, where you spend time together as a family, and which locations already hold special memories. From there, we can plan the perfect family photo shoot in a West London park that feels right for you.

I always recommend starting a family photo shoot early in the morning. Around 8am, most London parks are quiet, playgrounds are often empty, and we have the freedom to choose the best locations.

By mid-morning, parks are much busier and it can be harder to keep backgrounds clear. An early start is well worth it for relaxed family photography and beautiful images.

Of course. You may like to take a look at family photos in Holland Park, family photography in Regent’s Park, and baby photos in Kensington Gardens, or browse my blog where you can see thousands of family photo shoots taken over the last twenty-three years.
