A Joyful Summer Morning of Family Photography on Parliament Hill

I spent the most wonderful morning recently photographing a family on Parliament Hill in North London NW3, and I’m so happy to share a few of my favourite moments from the session here on the blog today.

One of the things I love most about my job is meeting fantastic families who are drawn to my relaxed and creative style of photography. People who want something personal and meaningful photographs that are beautiful pieces of art but also filled with genuine connection and joy.

We had such a brilliant time together taking family photography on Parliament Hill. As is often the case, I wish I’d had even more time to chat – about fascinating careers (for the grown-ups) and favourite cars (for my delightful little subject). This kind of morning is always a reminder of how lucky I am to step briefly into the world of a family and document a few hours of their life.

The Beauty of Parliament Hill in Family Photography

Parliament Hill in NW3 is one of my favourite places for family photo shoots. The views are spectacular, the wild spaces are full of energy and opportunity, and there’s always something new to see. I love to include the surroundings in my pictures – it’s such a creative challenge to look around and think, “What can I make here, in this moment?”

One image that stands out from this session shows the family framed by trees, almost a silhouette but with enough detail to give meaning in a graphic composition. It took a little patience to dodge the runners and dog walkers, but the final photograph captured everything I love about a family photography on Parliament Hill with a strong sense of place, and an even stronger sense of the people in it.

The hilltop also offers something genuinely rare in London: a panoramic view of the city skyline as a backdrop for a family portrait. The combination of that skyline, the open sky, and the wild landscape below it produces images that are instantly recognisable as Parliament Hill and impossible to achieve anywhere else.

Children, Dogs, and a Lot of Joy

I’m always excited when families bring their dogs along for their session, it adds such fun (and a bit of lovely chaos!). When I first met this family on Parliament Hill, I was immediately taken with their incredibly handsome and friendly dog. He and their son clearly adored each other, and photographing their playfulness was an absolute treat.

It is moments like these – running together, tumbling in the grass, joyful and slightly chaotic -that make me love this work. A child who is fully absorbed in playing with their dog has no awareness of the camera at all, and that is exactly the condition in which the very best portraits are made.

Long Grasses and Laughter

We found a shady corner on the hill to pause and play. My sessions tend to flow gently from place to place – finding good light, interesting textures, and spaces where the children can just be themselves.

One of my favourite moments from this spot was watching the little one and his dad play with long grass – simple, natural toys that sparked so much fun. These are the kinds of small, honest moments that make truly special photographs.

Climbing Trees and Big Imaginations

On the walk back, we stumbled upon some fantastic fallen trees – perfect for climbing, balancing, and pretending. That’s one of the many reasons I love the Parliament Hill end of Hampstead Heath: it’s full of shady corners and brilliant spots that feel like a child’s dream. These trees become ships, dragons, hideouts – whatever the imagination brings.

The shade and breeze made it the perfect place to pause on a hot morning, and the resulting photographs are full of adventure and wonder. There is a particular quality of light under old trees on Hampstead Heath that I love, soft and flattering with a beautiful quality that it quite it’s own.

Indoor Family Photography Near Parliament Hill NW3

When the heat became a little much, we headed back to the family’s beautiful NW3 flat for the final part of the session. I love the combination of outdoor and indoor photography as it brings real variety to the gallery and allows us to capture completely different moods within the same morning.

Inside, the light was gorgeous and a drink and a snack heralded the second part of the session. We played with toy trucks, told stories, and made the most of the beautiful space. I have photographed in a great many London homes over the years, and this one had a quality of light in every room that made the whole second half of the session a particular pleasure.

Books, Nooks, and Snuggles

Reading together is always one of my favourite parts of a family session. There is something so glorious about it especially for an avid reader like me. From a photography point of view, it’s a gift with parents and children close together, sharing a story, turning pages, talking softly. It is the kind of moment that a child will look back on in photographs 20 years from now and feel something very specific: that they were loved, that their parents had time for them, and that books are brilliant.

This family had the most beautiful window nook, which made a perfect setting for these quieter images. The photographs from this part of the shoot are among my favourites – calm, intimate, and full of the kind of connection that only shows up when no one is performing for the camera.

A Panoramic Finish Overlooking London

We ended the session in their incredible communal space, which offered panoramic views across London. It was absolutely breathtaking. I can only imagine how magical it must be on New Year’s Eve, watching the fireworks stretch across the skyline.

For us, it was the perfect backdrop for the final images of the day. One of my favourites shows the little one racing across the room, full of energy even after a long morning, with the city spread out behind him. It’s the kind of picture that feels full of possibility -and it perfectly wrapped up this joyful Parliament Hill family photography session.

Family Photography on Parliament Hill – Frequently Asked Questions

This is the question I am asked most often, and I love answering it because I have such a clear and honest answer after more than 20 years of doing this. Black and white does not date. The colour palettes, editing fashions, and coordinated outfit tones that feel fresh today may look dated in ten years. I have photographs I took in 2003 that look as timeless now as they did then, and that is entirely because colour is not competing for your attention – you are looking at the people and not the clothes. Without colour, we focus on the expression on a child’s face running down Parliament Hill. The way a parent grins as their son climbs a fallen tree. The dog who is absolutely certain something exciting is about to happen. These are the things that matter, and black and white makes them the entire story. I have never had a client come back and wish their pictures were in colour. I have had many come back and say it was the best decision they made.

It is genuinely one of my favourite locations in London, and I have been photographing there for over 20 years. The combination of open hilltop space with panoramic London views, wild meadow grasses, ancient woodland, and fallen trees that seem purpose-built for small adventurers is extraordinary. We have space to run, corners to explore, light that changes beautifully across the morning, and enough variety to produce a gallery of images that feel completely different from one another.

Absolutely, and I would often recommend it. Starting on the Heath gives us energy, movement, and the open sky. Coming back to your home adds intimacy, quiet light, and the details that make your family uniquely yours – the books on the shelf, the toy trucks under the table, the window seat where someone likes to read. The contrast between the two settings produces a gallery with real range and depth. I set aside the whole morning for you, so there is always time to do both if your home is nearby.

Not at all – it is actually exactly what I am hoping for. My whole approach is built around children who are doing things rather than posing for things. A child running full speed down Parliament Hill produces a better photograph than a child standing still and smiling at the camera. The energy, the movement, the total absorption in whatever game they have invented – these are what make the photographs feel alive. I have spent over 20 years learning how to photograph children in motion, and it is honestly my favourite kind of session.

I am always delighted when families bring their dogs. In my experience, dogs do two wonderful things for a family photo shoot: they give the children someone to interact with who is not the photographer, and they create the kind of spontaneous, joyful chaos that produces the very best pictures. Dogs are welcome on Parliament Hill and Hampstead Heath and I will make sure they are properly included in the session rather than treated as an afterthought.

Parliament Hill sits on the southern end of Hampstead Heath, so the wider Heath is always an option – from the more formal paths near Kenwood to the wilder stretches further north. I also photograph regularly in Highgate Wood, Queens Wood, Crouch End, Primrose Hill, Alexandra Palace Park and the surrounding North London area. If your home is in NW3, NW5, N6, N8, or anywhere close by, do get in touch and we can plan the combination of locations that suits your family best.
