Battersea Family Photography – Just One – Swings
I can’t help but feel that London has been incredibly lucky with the weather we have had this year – lovely bright winter days are absolutely wonderful for family photo shoots. I do hope they continue into spring and summer. This shot, taken on a brief visit to the park at the end of a newborn and family photography session in Battersea is an example of the type of lovely photograph we can take in this wonderful winter light.
We had had a wonderful morning photographing Ava’s baby sister and having a great time playing together as a family. My approach to newborn photography is very relaxed – focusing on moments and interaction rather than very posed images. I’m keen to take photographs that will strike a real connection with the families I photograph and will remind them of past days and all the wonder – and the chaos – of a new baby and a toddler at home together in these first days as a growing family. So I love shoots where we have older siblings involved – it’s a different dynamic to a solely newborn photo shoot but a dynamic I really enjoy. I love toddlers and how friendly and inquisitive they are, keen to play and happy with the camera around them.
Ava was an absolute joy to photograph; she was so much fun and so friendly (and so keen to play with my camera). We had a brilliant time as she read her books – I hadn’t known that Pepper Pig has a whole book about recycling! And played with her toys as well as exploring every shoe box and wash bag she could find in the bedroom. Who needs expensive toys when there’s a box of make up to play with!
At the end of the session I suggested we got outside for a little while – I thought a few outdoor shots would add a lovely element of variety to the pictures and the light was just stunning, it seemed a shame not to utilize it.
Baby Sophia was fast asleep but Ava had a brilliant time on the swings and I love this picture where her daddy is pushing her – higher and higher amid screams of delight. I love incorporating parents into pictures; this will be so lovely for Ava when she is older. I certainly know that my favourite photographs are ones where other family members are in the pictures too. It’s lovely to have this memory of the park around the corner and the excitement of the swings and this moment shared together, fun, excitement, love, happiness. It’s all here and it’s why I chose this image for today’s just one. I do hope you like it.
