Just One – children’s portrait photography in Blackheath, South East London

Today’s ‘Just One’ preview is a family photograph from my shoot with Helen and her fabulous family in Blackheath in South East London. I grew up in Blackheath and it will always be one of my favourite places to visit for children and family photography.

Being the youngest of three boys has to be a great place in the family dynamic – two older brothers to entertain you, make you laugh and to think of possibly the most dangerous places to put you for your family photographs. Charlie and Toby thought putting baby Olly into the front of the digger was the obvious choice for a picture of the three of them (and he was perfectly safe I promise, with lots of adults within catching distance). I have to admit I agreed with them, it works brilliantly for a photograph and says so much about the boys, the fun they have and the relationships between them.

I just love everyone’s expressions in this photo – Charlie, the oldest, is so proud and clearly in charge of the digger and also his younger brothers. I also love his camera t-shirt (even if it does read ‘no photos please’, a delicious irony on photo shoot day). Toby is standing at the back laughing and holding out his hands – in an earlier picture in the sequence, he has his hands covering his face, laughing up at his parents, astonished that he has been allowed to put the baby in the digger. It’s such a joyful expression, I just love it. And then we have baby Olly, with his hand reaching out to everyone behind the camera – namely his parents and grandparents – a happy family, full of fun and love.

It’s a picture that made me laughing during the taking and makes me laugh now. I know it will make the boys laugh when they are older, which is all I can ask for from a family portrait. I do hope you enjoy it too, today’s ‘Just One’ preview from our baby, children and family photography session in Blackheath, South London. I’ll share some more from the session on the blog soon – do check back, it’s a great set of pictures.
