Just One – newborn baby photography in the Barbican, central London

Today’s Just One preview image is a beautiful newborn baby and mother portrait from a recent family photography session in the Barbican in central London.

As a big fan of Brutalist architecture, I love photo shoots in the Barbican (although I do have to allow myself plenty of extra time to travel, as my ability to get lost in that baffling maze knows no bounds). The Barbican is such an interesting place to work and it channels the light in a manner which reminds me of New York, where the grid system acts as a giant light modifier – a treat for all photographers. I love how the flats are all so airy and full of light, while the gardens are mini parks perfect for family photographs, and the buildings themselves are a wonderful graphic backdrop for older children to run around and play.

For this family photography session, we were mainly based indoors with a brief spell in the lovely central garden. Newborn baby portrait sessions tend to take place indoors but with older brother also a big part of this family photo shoot, it was great to have the chance for a bit of a run around outside too. I love the variety that mixing locations brings to a set of family photographs.

This beautiful newborn baby was an absolute joy to photograph – she was sweet natured and alert, engaged in having her photograph taken during the session. I think one of my favourite images is this ‘Just One’ preview, taken at the end of our family photography shoot when the baby had fallen asleep after a feed. I love how peaceful and cosy she looks, so happy and content. But what makes the image for me is her mothers’s expression, breathing in her baby daughter. It’s an expression of pure, intense and incredible love, and I feel privileged to have captured this in a photograph.

I do hope you like it, today’s ‘Just One’ preview image from my recent newborn baby and family photography session in the Barbican, central London.
