Newborn Photography with Grandparents and a Toddler in North London

At-home newborn photography in North London

This relaxed newborn photography session in North London brought together grandparents, parents and a toddler to welcome a new baby into the family.

Newborn photography sessions are always so delightful and are often some of the most special days in my year. There’s a magic to these early days when a family are just getting to know each other and the love in the room is so palpable. The ones I love the most though are when there is an older sibling too, as this adds a level of delightful chaos and that’s where I take some of my favourite photographs.

I’m always drawn to interactions and relationships and to telling stories, and there is no story more wonderful than a family getting to know a new member.

For older siblings it can be a strange time, often overwhelming, as a new baby arrives to take some of the time and attention. But it’s also a moment where they begin to know a sibling and the joy this brings – someone to interact with, to hold and to love. These moments of connection are so special, whether it’s a gentle kiss or an inquisitive look. These are moments to treasure.

I’m always super relaxed on all my photo shoots, but this particularly comes into play with sessions involving newborns and toddlers, where there are many different elements to juggle. We work around feeds for the newborn, and also energy levels, excitement, and naps for older siblings. A sense of humour and plenty of patience means we all have an amazing day, and the resulting photos are real, authentic and treasured for years to come.

A relaxed newborn photography session with the whole family

Including grandparents in a newborn photography session adds another beautiful layer to the story. There’s something incredibly special about capturing those early moments across generations little details like tiny hands resting in well-loved ones, and quiet pride shining through in everyone’s faces.

This session was filled with warmth and connection, and it was lovely to see grandparents spending time with their new grandchild while also sharing tender moments with the older sibling.

What to expect from a newborn session with a toddler

Newborn sessions with toddlers are wonderfully unpredictable and that’s exactly how I like them – ‘joyful chaos’ is a term I’ll often use as I think it sums it up well. It’s even more fun with a newborn photography session with grandparents and toddlers, the more the merrier when it comes to families. Toddlers are curious, energetic, and full of emotion, and I never expect them to sit still or perform – we want to see them as they really are so the pictures will be authentic and make everyone smile in years to come.

I am child led in all my family photo shoots. I follow their lead and photograph the interactions as they unfold naturally. Whether it’s a cuddle, a moment of curiosity, or a burst of laughter, these moments tell the real story of family life with young children.

Natural newborn and sibling portraits

While traditional newborn photography often focuses on tiny sleeping babies – and those images are always beautiful – I also love photographing awake newborns. There’s something so inquisitive in the way newborns look at the world, as though everything is brand new because, of course, it is.

This little one was the perfect combination of sleepy and wide awake, giving us gorgeous snoozy portraits alongside alert, curious moments. These are always some of my favourite images to create.

Of course, I always make sure to photograph all the children, not just the newborn. Portraits of older siblings are just as important, and I loved capturing her older brother’s personality too.

Capturing newborn details and meaningful moments

One of the images families ask for most often during newborn photography sessions is close-ups of tiny hands and feet. I love creating these detail shots. The scale of newborns is just magical, and it’s incredible how quickly these tiny features change.

I often photograph newborn details alongside adult hands to really show the scale and that works particularly well on a newborn photography session with grandparents. In this session, there were some especially beautiful moments with the baby’s hand resting on her grandparents’ hands – hers so tiny and new, theirs full of stories and love. These images quietly tell so much about family and connection.

Family photos with grandparents and siblings

No family photo shoot would be complete without images of everyone together. I love creating family photographs that show real personalities, and it was such a joy to capture the fun, loving energy of this family.

This was my third session with them over the last year, and it’s been such a pleasure getting to know everyone. Watching families grow and telling their stories over time is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

One of my favourite images from the session shows grandparents and mum gathered calmly around the baby, while dad and the older son play in the background. It’s such a real depiction of life with two young children a moment of serenity alongside laughter and movement with love everywhere you look.

Balancing fun, laughter and quiet moments

It’s this beautiful mix of fun, laughter and quiet moments that makes a newborn photography session so special. I never know which images will become family favourites, and that’s part of the magic.

One of my favourite photographs from the day was taken during a quiet in-between moment in the older brother’s bedroom. The image shows a story being read with grandma while mum and the baby looked on. Quiet, real and deeply meaningful, everything I want a photograph to be.

Telling your family’s story through newborn photography

My photography is always about storytelling. This newborn photography session with grandparents in North London is full of storytelling images, all created in beautiful, timeless monochrome.

These photographs will still feel meaningful when the children are teenagers, when they’re adults, and perhaps one day when they share them with their own children and grandchildren. That thought never stops feeling special.

This session was such a joy, and I’m already looking forward to our next milestone together. Regular photo shoots allow stories to grow over time and that is such a wonderful privilege for me to be a part of.
