Family photo shoot with teenagers at Hampstead Heath Pergola, London
This family photography session with teenagers at Hampstead Heath Pergola was a relaxed, meaningful shoot in one of London’s most beautiful locations.
Photographing teenagers is such fun, and even more so when it is amazing young people who I have been lucky enough to watch grow up.
I first photographed this lovely family back in 2010 when the eldest was just four years old, so it was a real treat to see them again now she is eighteen and heading off to university.
This was one of those fantastic family photo shoots that had been in the pipeline for a while. Trying to find a date that works with busy young people is always tricky. Then it was catapulted up the to do list after we met again when I was photographing the eldest’s best friend’s eighteenth birthday party last year. It was so fun to meet up, and all the more delightful as I had not known that these two amazing young ladies, both of whom I have known almost their entire lives, knew each other. It was one of the most delightful moments of 2025 for me.
So after some diary management, we all met before the university term started for a relaxed family photography session in Hampstead.
Early starts for relaxed family photography with teenagers
Early morning family photo shoots are perfect for teenagers because locations are quiet, relaxed, and free from distractions.
As regular readers will know, I love an early start for a family photo shoot, and this is particularly important when photographing teenagers. While no teen likes being woken incredibly early, the reward is empty locations and no risk of being seen by friends.
This matters because the teenage years are often a time when young people feel a little self-conscious. Having the space to ourselves means everyone can relax, and the photographs are so much better as a result.
Hampstead Heath Pergola as a family photography location
Hampstead Heath Pergola is a beautiful and peaceful location for family photography in London, especially early in the morning.
We started our day with a trip to the beautiful Hampstead Heath Hill Garden and Pergola. It overlooks the West Heath and was the brainchild of William H Lever, later Lord Leverhulme, and the landscape architect Thomas Mawson. One of my favourite facts is that the terraces were built from the spoil of the construction of the extension of the Northern line to Hampstead. The first stage was completed in 1906, with further extensions added over the following years.
It is a wonderful spot for family photos and well worth the early start to have it to ourselves. For families looking for a classic London backdrop, Hampstead Heath Pergola offers light, space, and a timeless feel that works beautifully for family portraits with teenagers.
Relaxed family photos in the trees on Hampstead Heath
Natural family photos in the woodland areas of Hampstead Heath create relaxed, genuine images full of personality.
From the Pergola we walked down into Hampstead Heath to explore the stunning woodland and find some trees to climb. I love a tree based group photo because everyone looks relaxed and happy in a tree.
I took some of my favourite pictures of the day as we chatted and walked together, including one of the parents in the winter sunshine, a beautiful image of two wonderful people. These quieter moments are often where the most meaningful family photography happens, especially with teenagers who appreciate a more natural, unforced approach.
A mix of portraits, group shots, and natural interactions
A great family photo shoot includes portraits, group photos, and natural interactions to tell the full story of your family.
Over the course of a family photo shoot, I always look to create a mix of images, from individual portrait photos to interactions and group shots. This is just as important when photographing teenagers as it is with younger children.
If the opportunity allows, I will also include some action shots, because there is something so joyful about a running, jumping photograph that captures real energy and connection. This variety means your final gallery feels complete and reflects your family as you really are.
Finishing with a silhouette on Hampstead Heath
We finished with a stunning silhouette in one of my favourite spots on Hampstead Heath. It is always a challenge to find the quieter corners of the heath as the morning goes on and more people arrive, but we found a moment of calm to create this final image together.
It was a perfect way to end a relaxed family photography session with teenagers in one of London’s most loved outdoor locations.
Frequently Asked Questions about Family Photography with Teenagers at Hampstead Heath
What is the best time of day for a family photo shoot with teenagers?
Early morning is ideal because locations are quieter, there are fewer people around, and teenagers usually feel more relaxed without an audience.
Is Hampstead Heath Pergola a good location for family photos?
Yes, it offers beautiful architecture, open space, and easy access to woodland areas, which makes it perfect for a varied and relaxed family photography session.
What should teenagers wear for a family photo shoot?
Choosing comfortable clothes that feel like “them” works best and we can easily do a change mid-way through the photo shoot if teenagers and parents would prefer different outfits for their pictures.
How long does a family photography session usually take?
I always say to put aside a morning for a family photo shoot so we have time to explore different locations and perhaps have a break for a coffee and a snack half-way through.
What if my teenager feels camera shy?
It’s so common for people of all ages to feel camera shy and I’m very experienced in bringing out the best in the most nervous subjects. By making it a fun morning for everyone then it’s easier to forget the camera is there and really focus on a good time and that’s where the magic happens.
Can we include both posed and natural photos?
Yes, and this is usually the best approach for a balanced and meaningful gallery. It’s great to have some pictures with everyone looking at the camera and some stunning portraits but also the fun action shots are always really popular and so fun to take.
