Photo Shoot with Teenagers in NW3 and NW6

Family Photos on Hampstead Heath in NW3

Today on the blog I’m sharing a few favourites from a recent family photo shoot with teenagers in NW3 and NW6 in North London. I first met this lovely family for a newborn session back in 2019 when the youngest was only a few days old. It was a great morning and I have such fond memories of the time we spent together. Fast forward six years and we met again for a fantastic family photo shoot, with the older children now teenagers and the youngest an energetic six-year-old.

It’s always special seeing families again, finding out what they have been up to in the years in between, and updating their family photos so they can enjoy beautiful pictures on the wall. Images that sit naturally alongside those we have taken before and continue their family story.

Fun Family Photography with Teens

We met bright and early on Hampstead Heath for this family photo shoot with teenagers in NW3 and NW6. Hampstead is one of my favourite places for family photography and an area I know very well after many years of exploring and photographing families there. It’s a particularly good location when photographing teenagers, with plenty of hidden corners as well as wide open spaces and wonderful trees to climb.

Arriving at 8am meant we had the Heath largely to ourselves and we were rewarded with beautiful weather too.

Group Shots During a Family Photo Shoot

Every family photo shoot includes some group shots, so I made sure to capture some relaxed images with everyone together during this family photo shoot with teenagers in NW3 and NW6. We took some outdoors on the Heath and others back at the house later in the session. I love how different the images feel indoors and outside.

Mixing locations creates more variety for my clients and I always enjoy the challenge of working in different spaces to create a cohesive set of images.

Action for Relaxed and Natural Portraits

It’s always helpful to include movement during a photo shoot. It’s hard not to laugh when playing with dogs, running down a hill or jumping to catch a frisbee. Often it’s the reactions that create the strongest images, along with the moments just before and after the action.

My role is about gently encouraging situations where natural interactions happen and relationships shine through. Sometimes it’s the quieter moments that mean the most, like an older brother carrying a tired younger sibling up the hill after lots of energetic tree climbing.

Including Dogs in Family Photos

I’m always happy when families bring their dogs to a photo shoot, especially when photographing teenagers. It’s much easier to relax when there’s a favourite pet involved. Dogs bring a playful energy to family photos and I love capturing how children and teenagers interact with them.

In this family the dogs were clearly much loved and an important part of our time together, adding warmth and fun to the session.

Back Home for Family Photos in the Garden

Mid morning we headed back home for a cup of tea and to add some variety to our family photo shoot with teenagers in NW3 and NW6. Indoor and outdoor images have very different feels. Alongside the open landscapes of Hampstead Heath, it’s lovely to include the home itself, the interiors where family life happens every day.

In this case there was also a wonderful back garden, which made a great space for kicking a football around and capturing more relaxed moments.

Hobbies and Interests in Teen Family Photography

Before every session I ask families about their children’s interests. For this photo shoot with teenagers in NW3 and NW6 we had some great things to include. Alongside the dogs, there was music and parkour, which I hadn’t realised is taught at Paddington Rec in North West London.

It was such a treat to finish the session with a short visit to see the youngest showing off his skills on the apparatus. His balance, coordination and energy were seriously impressive.
