Family photography in Surrey with teens
I spent a brilliant summer day in Guildford in Surrey photographing this wonderful family. We’ve done a number of sessions since the eldest’s newborn photo shoot back in 2009 and it’s always a pleasure to see everyone again, to catch up with the news and, of course, to take more family photographs.
This is the best part of my job as a family photographer, seeing clients again and again and documenting the children as they grow up.
Family group shots in Guildford
Dodging the rain we started with a family group shot. These pictures are so nice to have and work so well for Christmas and birthday presents for grandparents, particularly at this time of year with Christmas already on the horizon. Giving family members a photograph is such a thoughtful gift and one that people enjoy more and more as time passes. It’s hard nowadays to find gifts that have staying power and photography certainly ticks those boxes.

I also always like to make sure I take a number of portraits over the course of a photo shoot so we have beautiful images of the children that will look amazing on the wall. It’s great fun to have a session that is a real mix of the more formal pictures but then, action and activity. I love to photograph all the incredible skills and hobbies that young people spend so much time doing and which sum up their characters so much.
If I think back to my teenage years, I wish I had pictures of me doing some of my many hobbies. Some, like photography, are a big part of my life now. But others, such as music, are no longer things I practice regularly, and it would be nice to have a record of how I spent my time.
With this in mind, I love to include hobbies and interests in all my photo shoots with teenagers.
Photographing sports and hobbies
Sports is a huge thing in this household – from athletics, which we summed up with the most incredible leaping image – to tennis, I had a brilliant time photographing them all.
For tennis I spent some time using the in-camera multiple exposure setting on my Canon EOS R5 Mark II. This allowed me to really get a sense of the tennis game in a unique image that my clients love.
Swimming pool photography
We finished in the swimming pool with some fantastic pictures with a wonderful summery feel. I love it when clients have a pool as it’s a great excuse to be really creative and I enjoy packing my camera into its case and diving in. We had such fun splashing around and these are photographs I know the girls will love.

I can hardly believe it’s October already and Christmas deadlines are just around the corner. I have a few sessions available between now and then, but they will get booked up fast. I always end up having to turn people away at this time of year because they enquire too late.
It takes time to process your pictures, and all our albums and frames are made bespoke, so we need to allow time for that.
