Mother and Daughter Portraits in Hyde Park
Portrait Photography with Adults
As regular readers will know, most of my work is with children. Working as a baby and family photographer for over twenty years I’ve built a thriving business photographing the little ones. However, as time has gone on and the children I first photographed as infants have grown and are heading off to university, I’m photographing more and more young adults and I’m loving it.
It’s not just regular clients who are choosing to have family photography sessions with adult children, an increasing number of bookings are being made by adult children who want pictures with their parents which is wonderful. It’s such a priceless gift and one of the few things we have which will grow in value over time and be treasured as much, if not more, in fifty years’ time, as it is today.
Mother and daughter portraits
I was thrilled when Jess booked me to take some portrait photographs while her mother was visiting before Christmas. I could tell from our communications beforehand that Jess was going to be such fun and I wasn’t disappointed, what a talented, interesting and beautiful young lady. Her mum was an absolute delight too, and we hardly stopped talking and laughing all morning. I love days where conversation flows and we found ourselves covering topics from great books, history, love and bereavement, to the decline in the quality of M&S cashmere. I love this about meeting new people, conversation spreads far and wide and by the end of the morning it was massive hugs all round for new friends.
At home family portraits in Paddington
We started our pictures at Jess’s beautiful Paddington flat. I’m always in awe of people who have incredible interior design skills and Jess has these skills in spades. Everything was beautifully arranged with stunning artwork on the walls and a lovely eclectic collection of ornaments.
Jess’s love of music was immediately apparent, and it was great to incorporate this into a few shots.
The light was wonderful too and we used it in different ways to create a lovely and varied set of images.
Out and about – portraits in Hyde Park
From here we headed out to beautiful Hyde Park for some outdoor images. I love to include indoor and outdoor pictures on a photo shoot as they have such different feels to them and the variety is lovely to have. I’m always interested to see which are my client’s favourites at their viewing sessions, sometimes it’s the pictures I expect, and other times it’s something quite different. I can’t wait to see which are Jess and her mother’s favourites.
In the trees
The beautiful trees in Hyde Park always draw my attention when creating photographic compositions and I loved taking portrait pictures of Jess and her mother as we sat on fallen trees or sheltered among the leaves. Using nature to add an extra element to a picture is something I really enjoy, and the depth added by this additional shape and texture can elevate an image in a wonderful way.
Headshots
It was great to take some more formal portrait headshots as part of our session. I’m always looking for variety and I like to create a lot of different options for my clients to choose from. Taking some head and shoulder portraits is always fun and these images look just as great in a frame on the wall as they do used for a LinkedIn profile if my clients choose to buy their digital files.
It always makes me happy when clients have purchased the digital files and I see my images used as profile pictures on social media or WhatsApp, it’s amazing all the different ways we can use our image from beautiful fine art prints and albums to mugs and fridge magnets. Photography is so all encompassing and I love the different lives the images live after our photo shoots.
Action images
I loved taking some action-packed images as mother and daughter ran through the park, I was thinking of the famous Norman Parkinson picture of Robin Miller and Pippa Diggle on Manhattan Bridge, I love the energy of that photograph and wanted to bring some of that to my photo shoot with this fun-loving pair.
Sculpture fun
As we walked through the park, we saw the incredible Yahoo Kusama Pumpkin by the lake. The Pumpkin is Kusama’s tallest pumpkin sculpture to date at 6 metres tall and 5.5 metres in diameter and provided a wonderful backdrop to a few images.
I love to include landmarks and public art in my images as they give context – it gives a sense of where and when – and can also be abstracted to create something new. Art begetting art, it’s a creative circle that just keeps on giving.
