Children’s and family portrait photography near Crewkerne, Dorset
This summer has involved a lot of travelling for my children and family portrait photography – I have been as far afield as Yorkshire and Cornwall, the Cotswolds and Birmingham, and on a Saturday in August I travelled down to Dorset to photograph Sophia at the family’s holiday home near Crewkerne. I first photographed Sophia when she was only a couple of months old, so it was wonderful to be invited back to visit the family.
It’s always fun to photograph in different places – I love London parks so much, but it’s nice to have variety and enormous gardens, beautiful houses and swimming pools are always good fun. It was a beautiful day for Sophia’s photo shoot – we even had to go indoors to play for a while as it was too hot in the garden, not a usual state of affairs for an English summer.
We had a wonderful morning together. We explored the garden and Sophia showed me lots of her favourite activities – from butterfly chasing to croquet, from skipping to spider hunting. We explored all of her favourite hideaways (and there were many in the amazing garden, including the wonderful rhododendron hidey-hole with the wrought iron gate). It’s the kind of garden that is a childhood wonderland, and I can only imagine how much fun Sophia will have with her family and friends exploring, hiding, den-building and game-playing as the years go by.
When we got a bit hot and tired for our outdoor adventures, we headed indoors for a drink and a game of hide and seek around the house. I love a game of hide and seek – it’s the looks of glee on both child and parent as children and adults are found, and also the hilarity of anyone trying to fit in the most ludicrous places – parents under beds, children in cupboards, me behind the door. It’s a real favourite and always results in such lovely shots.
Our final activity was the swimming pool – I admit I was jealous not to be in the cool water on such a hot day, it looked magical (although I am told was a touch chilly). Sophia had a wonderful time pretending to be a mermaid and playing games with her mother. I’m so glad to have been able to record it in photographs which are bound to bring back memories accompanied by smiles and laughter for years to come.
Here are a few favourites from our children’s photography session near Crewkerne, Dorset – I do hope you enjoy them.
