Family photo shoot in High Wycombe

Extended family photography session in Buckinghamshire

Easter weekend saw me heading to High Wycombe for a fantastic extended family photo shoot. April has been so busy, and with the incredible weather, we’ve had fantastic light for all my family photo shoots.

We had a brilliant day for our extended family photo shoot in High Wycombe with some moments of bright sunshine, but also soft cloud cover for much of the morning which was perfect for family photos in the garden where directional sunshine would have been more of a challenge. It all worked so well and combined with amazing subjects, meant it was a day to remember with a set of images I love.

Photographing in a place that is special to you

We had spent some time before the session working out where to take the pictures. We had options, the family home in London or the grandparent’s home where the adult children grew up in High Wycombe. We went for the latter, a place that is so special for everyone and was a brilliant location for our photo shoot.

We started with a few group shots by some beautiful cherry trees, getting a few portraits in the bag before the day unfolded.

A family walk and finding backgrounds

A local wood was the location for the first half of our family photography session in High Wycombe. I always like to get out first thing as it concentrates everyone on the idea of the photo shoot and it’s easier to go out when the parks and woods are empty and then come back mid-morning for a snack and more pictures at home.

The woods also offered shade from the bright early morning sunlight giving us soft light for beautiful portraits.

The woods were stunning, and I loved finding some opportunities for different types of image as we walked around and explored.

Grandparents

My pictures of my parents are some of my most treasured possessions, so I was so pleased to take some beautiful photographs of all the generations as the day unfolded. It was also wonderful to see the interaction between generations as the children clearly adore their grandparents and are adored in return.

Bubbles and play on our High Wycombe family photography session

As well as the portraits and group shots there were also action shots galore as everyone had a brilliant time. We had bubbles for the little one and gymnastic, acrobatics, and games of chase, it was such good fun.

Football skills

From the nearby woods we headed home for a cup of coffee and a slice of the most incredible pie that I’m still thinking about weeks after our photo shoot. Then, full of energy we were back to it for the second part of the session.

At this point we headed out to the garden for a game of football, and I got a sense of a real family game with skills passed on down the generations. It was so much fun watching everyone play and I was impressed by some seriously fancy footwork. Laughter ensued as it became clear who the competitive members of the family were.  The expressions of the observers can be just as fun, and I loved seeing how everyone interacted

Garden games and red kites

When the little one woke from his nap he was straight out to play again, toddling around, enjoying playing in his Wendy house which had been used down the generations.

We weren’t the only ones keen to play in the garden though, the local red kites also appeared testing my wildlife photography skills and the patience of the family cats.

Games, toys, fun, laughter, and the best pie ever, what an amazing way to spend a morning
