Family Photography Adventure with Grandparents

A fun family photo shoot in Derbyshire

I was thrilled to book this session, my seventh with this lovely family, to include a trip to visit grandparents in the North of England.

We’ve been working together since 2014 and over that time we’ve spent so many wonderful days together. We’ve explored local parks, we’ve played at home, I’ve taken some of my favourite ever pictures, the children are always such fun to spend time with.

This year we decided to venture further afield, and this is something I often do with families I’ve been working with for a length of time, as it’s fun to mix things up a bit and include the wider family.

We booked an AirBnB and I jumped on a train. I was off to photograph the family, with their grandparents, in a beautiful part of the work I’d never been to before. I love how my job takes me to new places and I get to explore some of the most beautiful areas the UK has to offer.  Arriving early the day before I got to enjoy a fantastic walk in the countryside taking landscape photos on my phone, a lovely relaxing way to spend an afternoon and get a feel for the area.

Starting early with breakfast out and a game with a favourite dog

We started bright and early and headed out to a nearby garden centre. We had to pick up a birthday cake and also it was a great option for coffee and a bacon sandwich. The real attraction though, particularly for the kids, was the dog who belongs to the owners and is clearly a huge favourite with everyone.

As soon as we arrived he came out to meet us, and within minutes the kids were racing onto the field, kicking a ball for the dog, and a fun game of catch ensued. I imagine that, for a dog, then living at a glorious garden centre like this must be heaven. Visiting kids are always so happy to play. We had a brilliant time together.

After a delicious coffee and bacon sandwiches we headed on into the countryside for some more photographic opportunities.

A picturesque viewpoint

We parked at a beautiful spot along the road and the kids had a lovely time running around. As the rain clouds gathered, the children showed me how high they could jump – really impressively high – and generally running off some energy before the weather turned and, as the rain began to fall, it seemed the perfect moment to jump in the car and head to Grandad’s house.

Fun with Grandad

Visiting Grandad was such a treat. I could see immediately where the kids got their photogenic genes from. I loved taking pictures while we discussed old cameras. A phenomenal Thai meal was served  and we all had such a great time, even dodging the showers to get out into the garden for a time. I was in awe to discover that the monkey puzzle tree which dominated the garden had been planted by Grandad many moons ago.

A glorious afternoon with Grandma

After lunch we headed off to see Grandma and another section to our action-packed photo shoot. I was really excited to meet a lady I knew to be a genius with kids – I’d heard so much about the incredible ideas and activities that she suggested for her grandchildren, especially during lockdown when I followed the ideas avidly on Instagram thinking how cool and creative they all were.

I loved seeing another beautiful patch of countryside where roads opened up to fields and glorious views.

It was a tired and happy photographer who caught the train that afternoon and slept most of the way back to London. It had been a brilliant day; the kids had been amazing, and it was such a treat to meet the extended family.  I’m thrilled with the pictures and I can’t wait to share the full selection with the family in due course. In the meantime, I hope you have enjoyed this sneak preview and do drop me a line if you would like to arrange your own family photo shoot, do get in touch. I can’t wait for all the adventures 2025 will bring.
