Family portrait photography in East London

Black and white family photos

Today on the blog I’m going to be sharing a few favourite photographs from a recent family photo shoot in East London. I like to share a preview of some of my favourite images here to give my lovely clients a taster of what is to come at their viewing session, and also to give new clients a chance to get to know me and the style of work I create.

It’s fun to show my favourite images – selecting beautiful portraits, fun family shots, and all those quirky moments which make families unique.  The fact that my sessions are very child led means that they are never the same – each day is a new adventure.  This makes it the most wonderful fulfilling job for me and also means that my clients receive beautiful images that tell their story and will be so fun to look back on as the years go by.

Family photography that is child led

Working in a documentary style for much of my family photo shoots means that we are recording life as it is lived, in all its joyful chaos.

For this session then it was all about diamonds and magic wands. Having been given her first tiara the day before there was no way this little one was going to take it off at the beginning of the session. It was so cute though, and the only thing you can do in this situation is lean into it and make it part of the fun. So, wands galore and my very best frog impression became a big element at the beginning of our photo shoot.

Finding interesting compositions in unlikely places

One of the things I enjoy most in my work is finding interesting angles and compositions that might often be overlooked. When this little boy sat down on a bench I immediately though that an image would be much more interesting if taken using the arm rest as part of the composition thereby creating a frame within a frame and leading the eye to the subject for a unique portrait.

Telling a story

I also love to tell stories in my images, and we had a great time playing hide and seek. These children are always such a joy and I love the way they throw themselves into any game, utterly immersed in the excitement. I often feel that, as adults, we can learn a lot from little ones about how to really enjoy the moment. I always enjoy myself so much with this lovely family.

Looking for light

Looking for, and finding, interesting light is also one of the challenges for a family photographer. Working on location I’m using available light and whatever weather the day throws at me. We were lucky to avoid the rain this year – it seems to have been so wet in 2024 – and we also found some incredible patches of light like this bamboo cave in the corner of the park, just gorgeous!

Indoor pictures

After the park we headed home for a snack and some indoor pictures. Mixing up indoor and outdoor images works so well and adds a lovely variety to the photographs with different activities and different moods.  The new playroom was fabulous with lovely light and space to play, and we all had a great time until lunch beckoned and naps all round.
