North London Family Photographer

Welcome to the blog – I’m Helen, a North London Family Photographer. Today I’ll be sharing a sneak preview from a recent family photo shoot in Highgate in North London.  I like to show a small selection of favourites after a session to give my clients a taste of what is to come and also to give prospective clients an idea of the type and variety of images they can expect from a family photo shoot.  I hope you enjoy looking at them.

This was my fourth photo shoot with this wonderful family and our best one yet.  We’ve been meeting every couple of years to document the children’s lives and create a stunning visual record of their childhoods.  In relaxed family photo shoots, we’ve taken pictures in the children’s home and their favourite places, images that they will be able to look back on as adults.  We’ve played at home, we’ve scooted to Waterlow Park and Highgate Wood, we’ve breakfasted at Gails in Highgate Village, all the little day to day things that the girls do. It’s a wonderful gift for them to take into adulthood and I know they will love to look at these pictures as they grow up and remember the fun they have had together.

One of the joys of booking regular family photo shoots is that we can do different things each time. We can visit different parks, play different games, it’s such fun being a north London family photographer. I find it fascinating how some activities go forward from session to session (I love how London children travel everywhere by scooter for example) and other activities are based around showing off a new skill or hobby – I was so impressed with the one-handed cartwheels this year.

I also really enjoy the creative challenge of regular photo shoots; I’m always trying to come up with new ideas and creative approaches to my family photography. I want to ensure that images are timeless and will look brilliant as time passes but I also love to push myself, to try new angles and approaches, to utilise new lenses and the opportunities that technology brings. As a brand ambassador for Canon I’m uniquely placed for this (I’m the only family photographer to be a Canon Ambassador for the whole Europe, Middle East and Africa region). I get to try new kit as things are announced, and often before they are available to the wider public, and I always have the best equipment for the job. On this session I was playing with my new 16mm ultra-wide lens which gave me the chance to take this wonderful graphic shot of the little girl being pushed by her dad on the rope swing and also the spiralling spinning shot which I love and which used a slow shutter speed to capture the movement as I spun the camera in sync with the little girl showing off her gymnastics skills.

I’m also a huge believer that as well as the action shots on a family photo shoot it’s also great to make sure to take some pictures with everyone in. Family shots can be posed with everyone looking at the camera or a more casual moment such as this one taken from a higher angle as the family relaxes and chills out together. Both are beautiful and both so lovely to have.  Group shots only take a small amount of time on any photo shoot as most of the time is spent documenting the action as it unfolds but the resulting pictures are always such a joy. Having the different elements together, beautiful portraits, stunning group shots, and fun action pictures, builds a complete picture for the family to enjoy in an album and in frames on the wall.
