Woodland Photo Shoot with Teenagers
Regular photo shoots over the years
Six family photo shoots and a wedding. The time has flown by since we first met many years ago and it’s been such a privilege watching these children grow up. From photographing the parent’s wedding back in my days as a wedding photographer when I worked alongside my husband Tom, then meeting the eldest when he was a tiny baby, and regular photo shoots over the years. We’ve had such great times together and the pictures, which hang on a gallery up the stairs, are a joy to behold.
I was thrilled to put a date in the diary for this summer to visit the family and spend a day out in the woods recording family life and the fun they have together.
Home hobbies
We started at home for a cup of coffee and a few pictures before we headed to the woods. I loved seeing the boy’s detailed painting of their Warhammer figures and hearing about the different games they play with them. Then some photos of bassoon and football before packing a bag, jumping in the car, and heading to the great outdoors.
I love to mix indoor and outdoor pictures on my sessions as it’s lovely to see the bigger picture – relaxed portraits as everyone has fun outside – but also those hobbies and interests that are part of everyday life at home. I have so many memories of hours playing in my garden and practicing instruments, I’m glad to have recorded some of these for the boys.
The amazing woods
I love woodland. It’s one of the things I love most about where I live in North London, that we have some beautiful old woodland nearby. And woods are one of my favourite places to take pictures, so I was thrilled to head to Suffolk with the family to visit their favourite place and record their time there in pictures that will be so special.
It was wonderful to be taken for a tour and see what had changed since my last visit.
The treehouse
We played some brilliant games around the treehouse, 40-40-home being a particular favourite and I was amazed to see what a turn of speed the parents could put on. I had thought my sprinting days were behind me, but getting home I felt inspired to add a bit more speed work into my short runs around the park. Everyone was so nimbl, the kids were like lightening, as they raced around, hiding behind trees and climbing up to get to the base. I love activities like this, when people are laughing and having fun, that’s where the best photos are to be found.
Favourite climbing tree
We headed to the boys favourite combing tree, one that we’d used for a favourite image on our last shoot. I love how repeating a location can give such a sense of progression as we can see how everyone has grown from one photo shoot to the next.
It was also a great spot for the wonderful silhouette which opens this blog post, I love finding spots like this where land and sky, light and background and the creative use of shapes come together to create somethings special.
Water fight
We finished with a water fight, the last of the summer and such great fun. It wasn’t long before everyone was soaked but the pictures are a delight. I love water play on photo shoots, it’s the perfect way to finish a session and I’m already looking forward to more next summer.
