Just One – Amelia and George – children’s portrait photography in Surrey

Today’s ‘Just One’ preview image is a real favourite from a recent photo shoot with Charlotte and her family in Surrey. I seem to have spent a lot of time travelling to Surrey to photograph families recently, and it’s always a pleasure to visit such a beautiful county. It’s even more fun when we are lucky enough to have spectacular weather, and a fantastic location to work in – Charlotte’s garden is stunning and on such a lovely day, I was able to utilise the light to great effect to really emphasise the beautiful environment.

When I saw this path at the top of the garden with the light streaming along it and the lovely foliage in the background, I knew it would make a stunning spot for a picture; the light would create a beautiful halo effect around the subject – in this case, the children – making them stand out from the background, and really giving a feel of summer to the image.

For this picture, I asked the children to run to the end and back and, unbidden, they held hands. I just love it when the children add their own element to a photograph that elevates it to something really special; in this case, it provides a real insight into their relationship with big sister Amelia taking charge of her little brother, both of them brimming with happiness and fun. As they came back towards me, the sun worked its magic and lit up both the children, and also the tree and the grass, giving this lovely summery effect. For me, this image that is all about spring – one of my favourite times of year – and also about possibilities for the year ahead, for the children and all the fun they will have together.
