Newborn photography in Kensington
I have been photographing newborn babies and their families in Kensington for over 20 years, and if you book me to photograph your family I can promise you newborn portrait photography of the very highest quality.
Photographing newborns in Kensington is such a privilege. It is an incredibly special time for the family, and I am proud that so many families invite me into their homes to record these early moments. My approach is entirely natural: I do not use props. Instead, I aim to take pictures that record your life as it is in these first days, in your own home, surrounded by all your own things. The details that will bring back memories in years to come: the carefully arranged nursery, the particular light in the bedroom in the morning, the sofa where everyone piles in together at the end of the day. These details ensure your images are completely unique to you, and full of your family’s personality.
How I approach newborn photography in Kensington
Having worked in Kensington for many years photographing newborns as well as babies, children, and families, I know the area well and all its best locations. If we have a beautiful day for your photographs, we might take a gentle stroll to Holland Park or Kensington Gardens to add a few outdoor images to the set, making the most of the beautiful surroundings to give you real variety across your final gallery.
My newborn photography sessions in Kensington are always relaxed and unhurried. I work entirely around your baby, ensuring that their needs and yours come first throughout. There is never any pressure to hurry a feed, rush a nap, or push on when everyone needs a moment. The best newborn pictures always come when everyone is comfortable and calm, and I never lose sight of that.
As families grow there are often older siblings at newborn photography sessions, and you can be completely confident that I will take beautiful photographs of your older children alongside their new brother or sister. It is always a privilege to see these relationships at their very beginning: the excitement, the curiosity, and sometimes a little uncertainty as they get to know each other. I am lucky to often see these relationships develop over the years, from those first inquisitive glances to running around together in Holland Park or building dens in the garden as they grow up.
When to book your Kensington newborn photography session
I recommend scheduling your newborn session for when your baby is under a fortnight old. Days six to ten are ideal: your little one is still tiny and new, and that extraordinary newborn quality, the particular way they curl and stretch and sleep, is still at its most beautiful. Babies grow so quickly in those first weeks, and it is lovely to capture those early moments before they are gone.
After around four weeks, I generally recommend waiting until your baby is about four months old. That early newborn window is a short one, and it is worth booking your session date before your baby arrives so you are not trying to arrange everything in the first exhausted days after birth. I am always happy to move dates if your baby arrives early or late, so there is no risk in booking ahead.
If you have missed the window don’t worry, the lovely thing about babies is they just get cuter and the next stage will bring new wonder as your little one starts to smile and lift their heads at about 12-16 weeks. If you are unsure on timings call me and we can chat it through, I’m always happy to answer your questions.
Helen was just the absolute best choice for taking our baby’s photos. She immediately made us feel relaxed and comfortable, and engaged our daughter so naturally that the whole experience felt like a treat. On top of that, we’ve now got the most beautiful pictures to look back on in future – she captured the baby’s many expressions so perfectly. We will treasure these forever. They go above and beyond all our expectations. Anyone looking for gorgeous photos of their baby and a truly kind, warm and relaxed photographer should go to Helen!

Newborn Photography in Kensington – Frequently Asked Questions
I photograph newborns and their families across Kensington W8, South Kensington SW7, and the wider Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, including Chelsea SW3, Notting Hill W11, Holland Park W11, and Earl’s Court SW5. All my newborn sessions take place at least partly in your home, so as long as you are within reach of central London, I am happy to travel to you.
The ideal window is between four and fourteen days after birth. In those first two weeks, newborns still have that extraordinary curled, sleepy quality that makes newborn photographs so tender and so distinctive. After about four weeks that quality begins to change as babies become more alert and less settled. If you are past that window, it is usually worth waiting until your baby is around four months old, when they are smiling, lifting their heads, and full of personality. I photograph all of those stages beautifully.
Yes, and I always recommend it. The first days after a baby is born are exhausting, and the last thing you want to be doing is trying to find and book a photographer while you are also learning to look after a newborn. I am flexible around early or late arrivals, so there is no risk in booking ahead. It also means your date is secured before you need to worry about it, which is one less thing to think about.
I always start newborn sessions at home, where your baby is most comfortable and you have everything you need to hand. If the weather is beautiful and your baby is happy and settled, we can then head out for a short walk to Holland Park or Kensington Gardens to add some outdoor variety to the set. This is entirely optional and always follows your baby’s lead. Some sessions stay entirely at home and produce the most beautiful results; others include a lovely outdoor section that adds a completely different feel to the final gallery.
Absolutely, and sibling portraits are one of the things I love most about newborn photography. The relationship between an older child and their new brother or sister is at its very beginning during a newborn session, and the pictures we make of those early moments become some of the most treasured in any family’s collection. I always make time for sibling portraits as well as individual portraits of the new baby and quieter family moments. Older children tend to settle into the session quickly and I am very experienced at keeping them engaged and relaxed throughout and also making sure they have their moment in the sun while their new sibling is feeding, everyone feels involved and seen and the resulting pictures reflect this.
Newborn sessions are always baby-led, so I never set a fixed end time. A typical session runs for a full morning so we never feel the need to rush. We work around feeds, nappy changes, and settling time, and I stay for as long as it takes to build a beautiful, varied gallery for you. The relaxed pace is one of the things my clients value most, and it is what makes the pictures look as natural and unhurried as they do.
Around three weeks after your session, my colleague Andrea will visit you to show you your images together for the first time. At the viewing, you choose what you would like to order. I work with exceptional printers and framers to produce museum-quality prints and wall art, and my albums are designed to show your pictures at their very best as well as offering the digital files. You can find full details on my prices page.
