Family Photography in Dulwich
South East London Photographer
It was a trip down memory lane for me as I travelled from my mum’s house in Blackheath across south east London to Dulwich. This was a route I traveled frequently in my teenage years as I attended sixth form at Alleyn’s School in Dulwich.
Arriving with a smile on my face from great memories, and also because the sun was shining, I was thrilled to meet this lovely family for our photo shoot.
Early light in the park
We headed straight out to the park to make the most of the early morning light and also to take pictures before it got crowded. I’m always aware of crowds, both because I don’t want other people in the back of my photos but also because working around crowds can make my subjects feel self-conscious, it’s much easier having your picture taken when there aren’t lots of other people around.
The light was lovely, and we found a lot of pockets of shade to work in – bright sunlight isn’t great for photos, much better to use the soft light under a tree.

Portraits
It’s always lovely to take individual portraits of my subjects and the children – young adults – were all so photogenic.
I really enjoyed hearing about their interests, from Red Dead Redemption II (a computer game that is also a favorite of my husband’s), the fun of learning Classics (a subject I find fascinating), to a summer job as a health assistant and the existence of a career in forensic genetics, something I will definitely find myself googling to discover more about, I had never heard of it before and it sounded so interesting.
We took some lovely family groups utilizing some fallen trees and natural shapes to create interesting compositions
Grandparents
Mid-morning we headed home for some pictures with grandparents. It’s always lovely to have grandparents involved in a photo shoot as these pictures are so important for everyone. Some individual portraits combined with some family shots to round off the session
Football and gymnastics
Walking around the park it became clear that football and gymnastics were important activities. I’m always thrilled to include some action pictures on all my sessions. I love experimenting with movement and shutter speed and different ways to create images in camera. I had great fun playing with multiple exposure to create a fantastic different take on a cartwheel picture.
Fun with the dog

I loved seeing the games the children played with the dog and how much she clearly loved running around with them, even if she did eat the football!
