Family Photography in Twickenham and Richmond
Family Photos in Richmond Park and at home in Twickenham
Today’s blog post is from a wonderful family photo shoot with teenagers in Richmond. I’ve done two family photo shoots in Richmond recently and it’s such a lovely place. Whenever I visit, I think I should take pictures there more often. Richmond Park is such a beautiful location with so many possibilities and I had such a great time with this lovely family making the most of all it had to offer.
Photographing teenagers is one of my favourite things to do and I’m doing more and more shoots with older children now. I’ve been a professional family photographer for 21 years and so many of the families I worked with when I first started have children who are growing up, finishing exams, and heading off to university. It’s a real privilege photographing children in their teens. I love learning about their lives and creating images that they can treasure as they go on into adult life.
This session was booked earlier in the summer, and I had been really looking forward to it. The family sounded such fun and we had some fun hobbies to include with sports and music on the agenda as well as some family portraits.
Starting with a walk
When I arrived, it was drizzling but the forecast told us it would stop soon and believing that luck favours the brave we headed out without coats to enjoy the empty park. By the time we had arrive in Richmond Park to take our family photos the rain had stopped, and the light was beautiful, soft and grey like a giant softbox creating beautiful lighting for our portraits.
We started with some group shots and then headed off to see what we could find.
Working with the environment
Something I really enjoy when I’m working is seeing what catches my attention on the day – little patches of light, or interesting trees, curving paths. There are so many things that can bring an image together and I like to utilise the landscape as much as possible both to give images a sense of place and also to create stunning images that work so well on the wall.
Finding the light
I also love to find pockets of light, whether for a dramatic silhouette or a portrait with interesting modelling on the face, it’s fun to see what the world offers up on each day.
The Isabella Plantation had a lot of interesting glades and picturesque bridges that we could incorporate into our images.
Sport and action
As regular readers will know I love photographing action, there’s nothing that makes me happier than taking pictures as children throw a ball around and engage in a competitive game. We had a great time as the boys jumped for some high passes and I worked to capture the action in unique image to treasure.
Violin
Then it was back home for a few final images of the budding musician with her violin. I’ve been lucky enough to listen to a lot of very talented young people in my time as a family photographer, but this was a cut above. Studying at a dedicated music school the talent on show was incredible. I felt I got my own private concert as worked to find some different angles for pictures both indoors and out in the garden, I think the garden shots are my factories, there’s something wonderful about the combination of music and nature.
Our day was a joy from start to finish and I feel so lucky to have spent the morning with three such interesting and engaging young people. I hope you will enjoy looking at this sneak preview from our family photography session with teenagers in Richmond.
