Portrait photo shoot with teenagers in Wimbledon
Teenager photo shoot in South West London
I had a great time photographing these wonderful young people recently on a photo shoot with teenagers in Wimbledon, South West London.
I always love photographing teenagers and young adults as they are always so interesting to chat to and I’m fascinated by their lives and experiences. Each generation grows up so differently and each has so much to teach us. It was wonderful discussing school subjects, degree courses, favourite books, thoughts on AI, use of social media (which seemed much more healthy than most of the older adults I know) as well as hearing about amazing holidays and – most excitingly for me as an ex-runner – the plans for the next day’s Brighton Marathon. I’m writing this not knowing how that went but hoping it was the most incredible and magical day.
It was a wonderful photo shoot from start to finish and I’m thrilled to be sharing a sneak preview of a few favourites here on the blog today.
Finding a great location for our family photos
Wimbledon is spoiled for choice for great locations for family photography as it’s such a beautiful area with so many lovely green spaces. We decided on Canizaro Park for our session as it has so much variety and was a park where the children had played a lot when they were younger.
Meeting very early on a weekend it was deserted, just us and a couple of dog walkers which made for a relaxed photo shoot. While no teenager likes a very early start, there’s method in getting up and out early as having the place to ourselves means nobody feels self-conscious and we can relax and enjoy the session.
Walk and talk to get relaxed results
It’s great to be able to walk and talk as we take pictures. We find spots where we can stop for some portraits, and then explore to find new places, utilise the light, and also keep things relaxed.
I love searching out new opportunities as we go, no day is ever the same and there’s always a new and unique picture to take – photographing families is such a fun and creative job.
Individual portraits and group shots
Working with teenagers and young adults it’s always lovely to take lots of individual portraits. These images show who they are at this important and transformative time in their lives. These three were naturals in front of the camera and I really enjoyed taking photographs of them separately and together.
Rain doesn’t stop play – working indoors
Unfortunately, not everything went in our direction and by 9.30 the rain was coming down. While we sheltered for a bit under a tree it was clear before long that the outdoor element of our photo shoot had come to an end.
This is never a disaster though; there are always other opportunities around the corner. We headed home for a cup of tea and a cooked breakfast (always a treat on a photo shoot) and then some indoor pictures which added a lovely variety to our photos – sometimes bad weather can have brilliant results.
Indoor shots were a mix of portraits and action shots as we played a couple of rounds of Monopoly Deal which is one of my favourite card games. If you haven’t played this I highly recommend it, it’s so much better than the traditional version of Monopoly. A fast paced and fun card game it combines just the right level of competitiveness with some excellent cards which can turn a game on its heels during a round. This makes it so much fun as nobody gets left behind and its short duration keeps the pace of a photo shoot. We had a lovely time, and it was a great opportunity for me to take relaxed candid portraits as everyone played.
The kitchen table also has amazing light which really added to the atmosphere and the opportunities.
