Family Photography in Richmond and Kew
I spent a wonderful morning in Richmond and Kew recently taking family photographs and I’m thrilled to share a few favourites today, a sneak preview for my clients before their viewing session.
As a family photographer in Richmond, Kew, and throughout London I love the process of writing blogs such as this one. It gives me the opportunity to look back over the wonderful day we had together and to bring together and highlight a few of my favourite images of the day. I love to be able to showcase the amazing families I’m lucky enough to work with and create this archive of my work. My blog goes back decades – I started my business in 2003. My skills have definitely improved over time, both photographically and linguistically, but it’s lovely to know there’s so much here, so many wonderful photo shoots, so many fabulous days and joyful clients. I’m so lucky to do a job I love so much.
Kew Gardens to start the day
We started our family photo shoot at the glorious Kew Gardens which is looking its absolute best at the moment. The new spring growth blossoms on all the tress and the Kew created large areas of long grass and wildflowers which make for amazing backdrops for pictures. Cow Parsley always creates wonderful images as well as beautiful bouquets along with a buttercup of two. We are careful, of course, to only play with grasses and wildflowers, or those found fallen on the ground. It’s amazing how much there is to find and, as ever, a good stick wins the day.
The children’s garden
The children’s garden was empty when we went to play just after 8am which was wonderful as it’s important not to get other people in the back of my images. We had such fun on the rope bridges and climbing frame before heading out to explore. It’s wonderful to be a family photographer in Richmond and Kew.
Running is fun
When I arrived and asked what my little subject’s favourite activities were, I was told ‘hide and seek, the playground, and running’ I am pleased to say we did all of the above and all of them were such good fun. I love using movement creatively in my work and running down hills was a perfect opportunity for some panning shots.
Hide and seek gave more opportunities for joyful fun and it’s great to get the real smiles and laughter by playing and having fun, these are the images that will bring joy for many years to come.
Ice cream
As always, I like to explore, have fun, find all kinds of things to do, and then be rewarded by ice cream – I think chocolate was the perfect flavour choice for our photos and having a matching beard with daddy caused so much amusement. It’s often these little moments that bring me the most happiness when I’ve taken a picture that records an interaction, an expression so fleeting and yet so typical of the joy and laughter of parent and child together.
Terrace Gardens Richmond
From Kew we headed for a wonderful quick lunch at the vegan Hollyhock Cafe in Terrace Gardens on Richmond Hill and then a last bit of play before we finished for the day. Bubbles had been promised and as regular readers know I LOVE a bubble.
We had such fun creating and popping bubbles and I love the results. There’s something so mesmerizing about a bubble and some of these looked out of this world, like giant jellyfish catching the light. It was such good fun.
It was a very tired and happy foursome that walked home along the river, my lovely clients to spend their afternoon chilling out and snoozing on the sofa, me to give blood on my way home (I highly recommend the West End donation centre if you are ever thinking of giving blood in London, they are amazing and fitted me in for a last minute appointment after I called at the end of my shoot). It was a perfect day.
